Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (also known as KB900325) is an update to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. It introduces new features and functionality and improves platform reliability. This recommended update is available directly from Microsoft Windows Update (in English) to licensed users of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. It will also be preinstalled on new PCs manufactured after October 14, 2005 with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Determine the version of Windows XP Media Center Edition and eligibility for Update Rollup 2
To determine the version of Windows XP Media Center Edition you are running:

Click Start Media Center.
Click Settings, General, and then About Media Center. The name "Version 2005" should display; if not, your PC is not eligible for Update Rollup 2.

Download Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is a recommended update available directly by visiting Microsoft Windows Update (in English). Applying Update Rollup 2 is a two-step procedure, and should be performed as follows:

Download and install Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB900325).
Download and install Microsoft QFE KB908250 (to resolve Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 post-installation issues on some PCs).

Feature and functionality enhancements
Some of the feature and functionality enhancements afforded by Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are these:

Resolution switching from the handheld remote
Enhanced DVD burning (if a DVD burner is present)
Automatic optimization

Known behavioral issues
Some known behavioral issues with Update Rollup 2 have been identified and are described in this section.

When playing and recording live TV, the Media Center will not enter Standby Mode
Some configurations refuse to enter Standby Mode when playing and recording live TV. Upon entering Standby Mode, the circular progress indicator will momentarily spin against a blue background, and then live TV will continue to play. Media Center should enter Standby Mode. In this instance, it is recommended to stop any recordings before entering Standby Mode.
After running display optimization, closing and restarting Media Center may cause a black screen to display
Closing and restarting Media Center after running display optimization should not cause a black screen. In this situation, to view Media Center, follow the steps below to use a setup wizard to resolve this behavior:

Press the Windows key on the keyboard to cause Media Center to display.
Click the upper right corner of the display to view Media Center in Windows Mode.
Click Settings, General, Media Center Setup, and then Configure Your TV or Monitor.
In the Display Configuration window, click Next.
In the Display Setup window, click No.
Select Display Type, and then click Next.
Choose Connection Type (DVI, VGS, HDMI), and then click Next.
Select Standard, and then click Next.
Click Yes to confirm display resolution, and then click Next.
Click Preview Automatic Adjustments, and then click Next.
Click Yes to Verify New Setting, and then click Next.
Click No, keep my current setting, and then click Next.
Click Finish this wizard, and then click Next, Finish.
Close Media Center, and then open Media Center.
Press Alt+Enter to display full Windows Mode.
When attempting to play a retail DVD, with a display resolution higher than 480i or 480p and using a component video cable, a black screen may be displayed
To resolve this behavior, lower the display resolution to 480i or 480p to view the DVD.
When viewing TV shows from a recorded DVD, a video distortion may be seen (combing effect)
